Purpose

DE-BRAKE transforms the third brake light into a real-time deceleration indicator. The harder the brakes are applied, there is fast flashing at full width and maximum brightness, instantly signaling the vehicle’s slowdown rate to drivers behind. And when slippery roads activate the ABS system, DE-BRAKE rapidly flashes, warning others that the surface ahead is dangerously slick.

Since their introduction in 1915, brake lights have hardly changed. While the addition of the third brake light added visibility, it still fails to convey critical details about deceleration. DE-BRAKE bridges that gap, improving communication between vehicles and drastically reducing the risk of rear-end collisions, particularly at highway speeds.

The Problem

Traditional brake lights simply can’t give drivers the full picture. The lights activate when the brake pedal is pressed, but don’t reveal how fast the vehicle ahead is slowing down.

The Solution

… But now, there’s DE-BRAKE!

Story Behind the Invention

William F. Kammermayer

Inventor William Kammermayer of Canada has developed a way to instantly show drivers behind you just how quickly you are slowing down. This advanced safety feature gives other vehicles clear, visual warning of your deceleration rate, helping prevent rear-end collisions and making every drive safer.

Rear-end collisions are a persistent danger on our roads, largely because traditional brake lights offer limited information. They signal that a driver has pressed the brake pedal but fail to show how quickly the vehicle is slowing down. William saw this gap as a critical safety flaw, especially at highway speeds, inspiring him to create DE-BRAKE.

This innovation transforms a vehicle’s third brake light into a real-time deceleration indicator. The harder the brakes are applied, the more of the third light will be illuminated (up to the full width of the vehicle), clearly communicating the slowdown rate to following drivers. Additionally, when the ABS system engages on slick surfaces, DE-BRAKE flashes rapidly to warn of hazardous road conditions. By providing this vital visual information, the invention enhances driver communication and significantly reduces the risk of rear-end accidents, making our highways safer.
